TAFT STREET CROSSWALK STUDY
Transportation
The study corridor is Taft Street between N 31st Road and N 30th Road (1,250 Feet in length). Taft Street is a 3-lane roadway including a center two-way left-turn lane. Broward County Transit (BCT) operates Route 8 fixed-route bus service on this portion of Taft Street with three bus stops (Stop ID Numbers 4542, 1475, and 0397) within the limits. The primary purpose of this project was to conduct a traffic engineering mid-block crossing assessment to enhance the safety of the pedestrians, based on field observations of the pedestrian crossings, safety data assessment, and the evaluation of pedestrian and vehicular traffic volumes during the summer when pedestrian volumes are at its peak. CPC made recommendations to the City on the installation of pedestrian crossings based on meeting pedestrian volume warrants. However, if warrants are not met, the addition of safe pedestrian crossings at N 31st Road will be evaluated to address the Commissioners concerns. Before data collection activities, coordination was done with City’s Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts (PRCA) Department, and Broward County Traffic Engineering Division (BCTED) to determine the best days of the week and times to collect pedestrian and vehicular volumes data.
